Have you seen the Great Fountain
In the middle of the square
Adorned with the jewels of conquest
Gold, silver, weak people's personal items
From it flows not water
But Iodine
The liquid flows never-ending
It splashes on the boots of the common people
Or on their bootless toes
They are simple people
But not Bernard Courtois
No simpleton is he
And although others made attempts
The substance is truly his
Not gunpowder
Not seaweed
Not a carbonate of any kind
Will ever hold a candle to his iodine
And it is in this town
Overlooking this square
That old Humphrey Davy can be found
He inherited the apartment from an aunt
Unknowing of this unusual phenomenon
But now due to contractual requirements
It is where he must stay
And look at the iodine every day.
